French and Nelson win NCAA West Region Fencing Championships

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Peter French won the 2010 NCAA West Region men's epee championship. French, a senior from Austin, Texas, defeated Kevin Mo from Stanford, 14-13, to win the title and clinched his third career regional victory. French finished with an 11-0 record. Freshman Heather Nelson won the women's saber title, 15-7, defeating Laura Decker from Cal Tech. For her accomplishment, Nelson was named USAFA Athlete of the Week (Mar. 13). Nelson had a 7-0 region record. The Academy's fencers competed at the West Regionals on Saturday, March 13 at UC San Diego.
In men's foil, Nick Stockdale was second and finished with an 8-1 record, and he improved on his 2009 fourth-place finish in the region. Simone Barrette was second in women's epee. She finished with an 8-1 championship record, and also improved on her 2009 third-place region finish.
In men's epee, Daniel Trapani finished in fourth place followed by Nathan Sorensen who was fifth. Phillip Choy was sixth in men's foil followed by Daniel Fang who was ninth. In men's saber, Michael O'Connor took fourth, in addition, Geoffrey Pamerleau took seventh and Scott Pippin was 11th. Jennifer Nolta finished in ninth place in women's epee.
