Air Force Hosts Boise State and Dayton
The Air Force women's soccer team plays host to Boise State and Dayton this Friday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons take on the Broncos at 7 p.m. on Friday and the Flyers at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Free t-shirts will be given out to the first 100 fans on Sunday.
2010 Falcons
Air Force returns 15 letterwinners, including eight starters in 2009. The Falcons also welcome seven freshmen. Air Force returns leading scorer Stephanie Patterson, a sophomore forward and two-time All-MWC selection in Bridgett Murphy, a junior forward.
Recapping Last Weekend
Air Force split a pair of matches to open the season last week, downing CSU-Pueblo 3-0 on Friday and falling 2-0 at Northern Colorado on Sunday. Freshman Megan Dozier scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Sophia Lockerby also scored for the Falcons vs. CSUP. Bridgett Murphy and Stephanie Patterson each had two assists and Kaleigh Moses also added an assist.
Team Captains
Juniors Krystin Shanklin, Meagan Eissele and Cassie Wilson will be the Air Force team captains for 2010.
Scouting The Opponents
-Boise State is 1-1 after splitting matches at Oregon (L, 2-0) and Portland State (W, 2-1). Junior forward Kati Lucas and sophomore forward Erica Parks leads the Broncos with a goal scored each. Junior Liz Ruiz has a 1.50 goals against average to go with 15 saves in 180 minutes in front of the net for Boise State.
-Dayton is 2-0 on the season after defeating Butler (1-0 in OT) and Toledo (2-1) last weekend. Sophomore midfielder Colleen Williams leads the Flyers with two goals and an assist. Senior Lisa Rodgers and sophomore Katherine Boon have split duties at goalkeeper and have a combined 0.47 GAA in two games.
The Coaches
-Larry Friend is in his second year as the head coach at Air Force. The 1985 USAFA grad is 3-16-1 as a head coach.
-Steve Lucas (New Hampshire College `86) is 87-87-21 in his 11th year as head coach at BSU.
-Mike Tucker (Cincinnati `69) is 202-79-16 in his 16th season at Dayton.
Opponent Connections
- Air Force sophomore defender Kim Koeppen is an native of Eagle, Idaho, and played for the Boise State soccer team in 2008 as a freshman. Koeppen appeared and started in all 21 games at Boise before transferring to the Academy in 2009.
- Boise State has three players on its roster from Colorado:
- Brianne Favatella (Colorado Springs - Pine Creek HS)
- Serena Montoya (Centennial - Cherry Creek HS)
- Katy Oehring (Littleton - Heritage HS)
- Boise State sophomore Brianne Favatella and Air Force sophomore Britni Carroll were teammates at Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs.
- Boise State, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, will become a member for the Mountain West Conference in 2011-12.
- Dayton freshman Andrea Todak and Air Force junior Krystin Shanklin both hail from Thousand Oaks, Calif., and attended Westlake High School.
