Air Force Finishes Competition at CU-Mark Simpson Invitational

With a rough final round on Tuesday, the Air Force golf team finished 13th at the inaugural CU-Mark Simpson Invitational, being held at the par-72, 7,741-yard course at the Colorado National Golf Club. The Falcons finished the tournament with a team score of 911.
The top Air Force performer at the tournament was sophomore Wes Denny (Cincinnati, Ohio). Denny, competing as an individual, posted a three-round score of 220 (+4) to finish tied for 24th. Freshman Kyle Westmoreland (Katy, Texas) led the Air Force team, posting a three-round score of 221 to finish tied for 27th place. Classmate Philip Colwell (The Woodlands, Texas) was next in the standings for the Falcons, tying for 42nd place at 225.
Also competing for Air Force's varsity team were Caleb Leestma (Jr., Seabrook, Texas), Andrew Hoops (So., Highland, Calif.) and Kyle Bailey (Sr., Austin, Texas), carding scores of 233, 234 and 235, respectively. In addition, junior Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) competed as an individual, tying for 51st place at 227.
New Mexico finished with a 5-under-par 859 to capture the team title, edging out runner-up Colorado State by a single stroke. Meanwhile, San Jose State's Mark Hubbard fired a 209 (-7) for the tournament to earn medalist honors.
The Falcons return to action next week, Oct. 4-5, when they head to Andrews AFB, Md., for the annual Service Academy Golf Classic. Air Force, competing against Army, Navy and the Merchant Marine Academy, will seek its 14th-straight title at the event.
