Falcons Fall to 18th-Ranked Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to No. 18 Pepperdine on Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Malibu, Calif. With seven kills, sophomore Cami Richan paced the Falcons, who fell in straight 25-9, 25-6, 25-10 sets to the Waves.
"In order for us to get better, we need to play really good teams," head coach Matt McShane said. "This was a good learning experience; for us to see how teams who are at a point we want to be play."
Richan opened the match with a kill, while freshman Lizzy Carpenter evened the set at two. Richan added another score, providing the Falcons' only point during an 8-1 run by the Waves. Freshmen Ayesha Hein and Victoria Foster each tallied a kill, while Richan posted two more and a solo block, as Pepperdine went on to take a 25-9 victory.
Pepperdine jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead to start the second set, when Carpenter produced the first offensive point for the Falcons (8-2). Richan, Foster and freshman Brooke Pottle each added a kill, but the Waves went on to take the 25-6 win.
Hein posted a kill for the first point of the third game, while Carpenter, Richan and Foster followed. Foster added another score (6-13), but Pepperdine tallied the next six points to go up 19-6. Coming out the Falcons' second timeout, Air Force traded points with the Waves, behind kills from Hein and Richan, as well as a pair of Pepperdine errors. The Waves tallied the final three points for the 25-10 victory.
Richan, who also earned a solo stop for Air Force, collected seven of the team's 18 kills, while Foster added four and a team-best .308 hitting percentage (4k-0e-13a). Junior Maiya Perich collected five digs, while freshman Hillary Keltner tallied 10 assists.
Air Force closes out the 2011 season on Friday, Nov. 25, when they travel to Northridge, Calif., to take on Cal State Northridge at noon.
