BOISE, Idaho - The Air Force volleyball team recorded seven service aces - its best single-match output since early September - during a 3-0 loss to Boise State on Friday, Nov. 4, in Boise, Idaho. Josalynn Wise (three), Ayesha Hein (two), Hillary Keltner (one) and Emma Dridge (one) collected aces as the Falcons fell in 25-13, 25-23, 25-16 sets.
"Our serving and passing was better than it has been," head coach Matt McShane said. "To go into an opponent's gym and get seven aces is great."
Hein opened the match with a kill, while back-to-back scores from sophomore Cami Richan put the Falcons up 4-2. Richan and freshman Victoria Foster provided the only points for the Falcons, as the Broncos used two long scoring runs to take a 15-5 advantage. Foster added another kill, while classmate Keltner put down a service ace. Richan, whose kill put the Falcons at the 10-point mark, recorded a solo block and assisted with freshman Kristen Holt on another stop. Holt added a kill, but Boise State took the first set 25-13.
Foster put down a kill to start the second set, while Hein and freshman Lizzy Carpenter added scores to even the set at four. Following another kill by Richan, Wise scored a pair of back-to-back aces. Kills from Holt and Foster put the Falcons up 9-7, but Boise State scored the next four point to take an 11-9 advantage. Holt and Foster collected kills as the Falcons pulled within one (13-12), while another strike from Foster and an ace from Dridge evened the score at 15. Boise State went up three (18-15), but kills from Carpenter and Richan, as well as aces from Hein and Wise, deadlocked the score at 19. The Broncos used a 5-1 run to reach set point (24-20), but a pair of BSU errors and a kill from Hein brought Air Force within one (24-23). Boise State finally scored the last point for the close 25-23 win
Kills Foster, Richan and Hein put the Falcons up 3-1 to start the third set, while a strike from sophomore Claire Bieber doubled the Falcons' advantage at 4-2. Boise State scored the next six points (8-4), before the Falcons responded with four straight points, including a kill from Holt, to even the score at eight. The Broncos took the next three points, but another kill from Holt helped Air Force pull the set within one (11-10). Hein kept the Falcons within one on two occasions, collecting a kill (13-12) and service ace (15-14). Holt added a kill at the 18-16 mark, but Boise State scored the final seven points for the 25-16 victory.
Richan paced the Falcons with 10 kills, while Holt recorded a team-leading .417 hitting percentage with sixth kills on 12 swings with just one error. Keltner collected 18 assists, while Wise added 14. Richan had a solo stop, while Holt and Bieber each added assisted blocks. Junior Maiya Perich collected a match-best 17 digs - the Falcons' fifth highest single-match total of the season - to move within two of the program's Division I mark.
"Kristen had a remarkable game," McShane said of the freshman who sprained her ankle during practice on Wednesday. "She had a bad sprain and we hadn't decided until warm-ups if she would play. But she played great."
Air Force closes out the home schedule next weekend with matches against UNLV (Thursday, Nov. 10) and San Diego State (Saturday, Nov. 12).
