The Air Force women's tennis team won its third straight match and improved its record to 3-2 this season with a 5-2 victory over Montana State Friday in Bozeman, Mont. The Falcons swept the three doubles matches and captured four of the six singles matches.
Air Force jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. Senior Sarah Cassman and sophomore Hannah Dake won the No. 3 match, 8-2, over Wena Tsan and Ellie Crum, then senior Christen Monreal and freshman Anastasia Hueffner won the No. 2 match, 8-4, over Andrea De La Torre and Jennifer Coll. Junior Tahlia Smoke and sophomore Melissa Cecil finished the sweep with an 8-7(5) win over Charlotta Hjalmarsson and Paulina Lopez at the No. 1 spot.
Air Force continued to play well in singles, as Cassman led things off with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over De La Torre at No. 4 and Cecil put the Falcons up 3-0 with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Tsan at the No. 2 spot. After Lopez gave MSU its first point with a three-set win over Smoke at No. 3, Monreal clinched the match for Air Force with an exciting, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory at the top spot over Hjalnarsson.
Hueffner downed Crum in three sets at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 4-6, (10-3), and Coll edged AFA junior Megumi Voight 6-2, 4-6, (10-8) in the final match.
"This was a hard fought match against a very good Montana State team," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Sweeping the doubles was huge for us going into the singles. Then Sarah Cassman set the tone for the match with her domination in the No. 4 match."
The Falcons will face the University of Montana on Saturday in Bozeman.
