Daniel Cohen Named a CF360 National Fencer of the Week

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. -- Air Force Academy men's foilist Daniel Cohen (Scarsdale, N.Y.) has been named CollegeFencing360 National Fencers of the Week, for the period of Feb. 28-March 6. Air Force senior Daniel Trapani (Houston, Texas) was selected as a CF360 Primetime Performer of the Week. The awards were presented by CollegeFencing360.com.
Cohen, a freshman fencer, will be returning to the NCAAs after previously earning All-America honors in 2009 (when he placed sixth at the NCAAs as a freshman at Duke). Cohen transferred to Air Force and sat out the 2010 college season, before fencing for the Falcons this season. Cohen entered the 2011 NCAA West Regional (March 5, at Air Force) as the No. 2 seed and secured his spot in the NCAA Championships by tying with the top seed, Stanford freshman Turner Caldwell, atop the round-robin standings (9-1 with 47-22/+25 in touches). Caldwell also went 9-1, with the regional title decided in a fenceoff (Cohen led 4-1 and held on for the 5-4 win). In an earlier bout, Cohen had a 5-4 comeback win over Caldwell. Cohen lost his first bout of the day, 2-5 vs. teammate Nick Stockdale, before rattling off 10 straight victories. Cohen registered a pair of key wins over two other Stanford fencers (5-2 vs. Alex Khoshnevissan; 5-0 Phil Arrendondo). Cohen has two years of college fencing eligibility remaining but is set to graduate from Air Force in 2014.
Trapani delivered several clutch wins at the NCAA West Regional (March 5, at Air Force) to likely secure his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships (bid becomes official on March 15). Trapani entered the regional as the No. 7 seed but finished second, after going 9-3 in his round-robin bouts (55-31; +24 scoring edge). He nearly swept Stanford's talented quartet - which would have forced a fenceoff with the Cardinal's Jake Harbour (who went 10-2, as the No. 2 seed). Trapani came one touch shy of tying atop the standings, after dropping a 4-5 bout to Harbour. He knocked off the other Stanford fencers, highlighted by a 5-1 win over top seed Kevin Mo (also 5-3 vs. No. 5 seed Cole Connely and 5-2 vs. No. 3 Kian Ameli). His only other losses (both 3-5) came against UC San Diego teammates Nicholas McGuiness (No. 6 seed) and James Galamba (No. 4), who ultimately won only six and seven bouts, respectively. Trapani earned All-America honors and nearly reached the final-4 DE at the 2009 NCAAs (placing fifth, also 14th in '08 and 22nd in '10).

The Primetime Performer designation - awarded regularly on sister sites CollegeSoccer360com and CollegeBaseball360.com, in addition to being a lead feature on the soon-to-be-launched CollegeSports360.com hub site - seeks to recognize achievement based primarily on situational factors, and not solely on raw stats. Selection for the CF360 weekly awards are based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria: • In general, preference is given based on the quality of the opponents and situational factors involved in the fencer's accomplishments (including contribution to team success). • Exhibited strong leadership and/or involved in clutch performances, such as match-winning bouts, noteworthy upsets, etc. • Contributed to team success, particularly in conference/regional/national postseason events. • Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual). • Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from team's home facility.
