Falcons Wrap Up Competition at MWC Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. - Led by junior Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), the Air Force golf team finished eighth at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. The Falcons, who posted a score of 292 on Saturday, ended the tournament with a 23-over-par 875, finishing just one stroke behind Utah.
Belz, the Falcons' top finisher at the 2010 MWC Championship, tied for seventh place individually this year, carding a 212 (-1) for the tournament. It marks the best conference finish for an Air Force golfer since 2005, when Tyler Goulding tied for seventh place.
Senior Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas), whose best round came on Saturday, finished tied for 31st at 221 (+8), followed by freshmen Kyle Westmoreland (Katy, Texas) and Philip Colwell (The Woodlands, Texas), who posted marks of 223 and 224, respectively. Rounding out the group of competitors for Air Force was Caleb Leestma (Jr., Seabrook, Texas), who finished in 41st place with a 230.
Eighth-ranked San Diego State captured the team title, edging out second-place TCU by two strokes, posting a three-round score of 847 (-5). Meanwhile, three players tied for first place individually, with UNLV's Derek Ernst, Colorado State's Ryan Peterson and New Mexico's Travis Ross each finishing the tournament with a 6-under-par 207. Ernst captured the title by scoring a birdie on playoff hole No. 3.
