Falcons Fall in Three to St. John's

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Lizzy Carpenter recorded a hitting percentage of .417, as the Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to St. John's during its second match of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational in Annapolis, Md., on Friday, Aug. 26. The Falcons dropped consecutive sets by a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 scores.
Carpenter connected on five of 12 attempts, while committing no errors to lead all attackers with a .417 percentage. Classmate Ayesha Hein collected a team-leading nine kills, while hitting at a .375 clip. Fellow freshman Hillary Keltner recorded 19 assists and tied with Hein for the team lead in blocks with two. Sophomore Josalynn Wise added a pair of service aces, while junior Maiya Perich accounted for nine digs.
The Falcons traded points with the Red Storm to open the match, tying the set at two, three, four and five, before St. John's used a 16-5 run to take a 21-11 advantage. Sophomore Claire Bieber collected her first collegiate kill, sparking a 5-0 run by the Falcons. Classmate Cami Richan and Hein added kills during the run and Wise added a service ace in the final points, as St. John's took the first set 25-18.
Air Force took the first two points of the second set, drawing itself out to a 9-5 lead behind kills from Richan, Carpenter and Richan, as well as an ace by Keltner. St. John's tied the set at 11, but Air Force regained the lead at 14-11. The Red Storm tallied eight of the next 10 points to take a 19-16 lead. Richan, Bieber and Hein added kills, but St. John's took the second set by a close 25-21 score.
The third set was all about streaks. Air Force took the first three points, behind a kill by Hein and an ace by Perich. St. John's scored the next seven points to go up 7-3, but Air Force responded with the next six points. Bieber put down a pair of scores, while Hein added a kill and teamed up with Keltner on a block during the Falcons' run to a 9-7 lead. The Red Storm returned with a 9-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. Hein added a kill as the two teams traded pairs of points, before Air Force scored six straight points to pull with three at 21-18. St. John's used one final run to secure the 25-19 win.
