Air Force fencers wrap up the Nick Toth Open

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy Nick Toth Open came to a close, Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011. In the Senior Men's Foil competition, freshman Alex Chiang, from Atlanta, Ga., was the men's foil champion. Chiang advanced to the gold medal round to win the bout, 15-3, against his opponent from the Denver Fencing Club.
Fencing for the Falcon Fencing Club was Phillip Choy from Air Force. Choy tied for third place in the competition. Also fencing for the Falcon Fencing Club was freshman Narayanan Veliyath, who took sixth place in his first Nick Toth Open. In Senior Women's Foil, freshman Lydia Hill, from Arlington, Ma., fencing for Falcon Fencing, finished in fifth place.
"We have a good group of freshmen fencers and I look forward to working with them and watching them grow during the next three years," said Head Coach Abdel Salem.
Also in Senior Women's Foil, Diana Hock took seventh place, Christina Jung finished ninth and Rachel Cranfill finished in 11th place. Ashley Chung finished in 15th place.
Air Force will host the Falcon Open on Oct. 29-30, the event is free and open to the public. On Oct. 1-2, the team will compete in the Amarillo Open in Texas. For a look at the remaining Air Force Academy fencing schedule, go to www.goairforcefalcons.com and click schedules.
