The Air Force men's tennis team remained undefeated this season with an exciting 4-3 victory over Texas-San Antonio Saturday in Wichita, Kan. Air Force (3-0) lost the doubles point, but rallied to win four of the six singles contests.
Junior Lance Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor captured Air Force's lone win in doubles, winning the No. 1 match, 9-8 (7-1) over Pedro Zanotelli and Yannick Junger. The Roadrunners won at Nos. 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead after the doubles competition.
Wilhelm evened the match a 1-all with a dominating, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Martin Ayala at the top singles spot, and freshman Alex Grubbs then won the No. 4 match, 6-2, 6-4 over Joel Rubio. UTSA took a 3-2 lead with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 singles spots, but Air Force sophomore Ali Rizvi tied the match at 3-all with a dramatic, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Daniel Moser at the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Alex Lineberry clinched the match for AFA with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over David Kelleher at No. 6.
"I'm so proud of the way our team fought today," said Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous. "After losing a tough doubles point, our guys came out fighting even harder in singles. Lance got us on the board with a convincing win at No. 1, followed by a solid win by Alex Grubbs. Ali Rizvi kept us in the match with a thrilling three-set win while battling cramps and Alex Lineberry rallied after being down 5-3 in the first set."
The Falcons take on Wichita State on Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT).
