Falcons Continue Six-Game Homestand This Friday
After playing four of its first five games on the road, the Air Force men's soccer team is in the midst of a six-game homestand at Cadet Soccer Stadium. This week, the Falcons will host 23rd-ranked Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Digital Network.
The Falcons enter the game with an 0-7 record after losing to San Diego State (1-0 in double overtime) and Bradley (2-0) at home last weekend. Cal Poly is 6-2 this season and has a four-match winning streak, including victories over San Francisco (2-0) and Yale (3-2 in overtime) at home last weekend. The Mustangs are ranked for the first time in four years.
Air Force Drops a Pair of Games at Home Last Weekend
The Falcons fell to 0-7 this season with a pair of losses at Cadet Soccer Stadium last weekend. Air Force dropped a 1-0 double-overtime decision to San Diego State on Friday and lost 2-0 to
Bradley on Sunday. Senior Brian Klazura and juniors Matt Payne and Zachary Modly led the team with three shots on goal against San Diego State and Payne had a team-high two against Bradley. Freshman goalkeeper Jake Schenk made five saves against SDSU and six versus Bradley.
Falcons Still Having Trouble Finding the Net
Since Klazura scored just 2:55 into the season-opening game at St. Mary's College, the Falcons have gone nearly seven full games without scoring a goal. Air Force has been outscored 15-1, including 11-0 after halftime, in its seven games.
Modly Still Near the Top of WAC in Shots
Modly is ranked fourth in the WAC with 23 total shots this season. He is the leader on the team with seven more than Payne. Meanwhile, Schenk is second in the league in saves per game at 5.17 and fourth in saves percentage at .721.
All-Time Series vs. The Mustangs
Air Force is 1-1-1 in three meetings all-time vs. Cal Poly. The Falcons won the most recent game, 2-1 in overtime, on Sept. 5, 2010 at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Oct. 22, 1999 -- T, 2-2 (2ot) at Cal Poly
Aug. 31, 2008 -- L, 2-0 at Cal Poly
Sept. 5, 2010 -- W, 2-1 (ot) at USAFA
Falcons Picked Second in WAC Preseason Rankings
The Falcons were picked to finish second in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Bakersfield was predicted to win the conference by the eight league coaches. Air Force senior Caleb Downey was selected as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year and fellow senior Brian Klazura joined Downey on the preseason all-WAC team.
Back to the WAC
After spending the last 14 years playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Falcons will begin play, once again, in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013. Air Force was a member of the WAC from 1996-98 before breaking off with seven other schools to form the Mountain West Conference. The MWC did not offer men's soccer, however, so the Falcons moved to the MPSF.
