Air Force sophomore Weston Steelhammer has picked up two more national awards for his performance in last week's 28-14 win over Boise State. Steelhammer earned the Football Writers Association of America Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week.
Steelhammer tied a school record with three interceptions against Boise State. He also had two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack to lead the Falcons. He leads the Mountain West Conference in interceptions with an average of .75 per game and is tied for second in sacks with the same average.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 11, 2014 on ESPN.
Each week during the 2014 season the FWAA All-America Committee will select a National Defensive Player of the Week from nominations made by the 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, major independents, and National Players of the Week from the FCS.
