Air Force Downs Academy Rivals at Chuck Davey Classic

DETROIT, Mich. - Backed by four individual victories, the Air Force boxing team finished first at the Chuck Davey Classic this evening (Oct. 24) in Detroit. Claiming a 4-2 overall record at the annual service academy showcase, the Falcons easily defeated its counterparts from Army (2-3) and Navy (2-3).
Senior Roy Taylor was named the team's Boxer of the Night, after claiming a 138-pound victory over Navy's Jimmy Lawson. Taylor was one of two Falcons to defeat a boxer from Annapolis, as junior Mateus Arcano kicked off the night with a 114-pound decision over Jose Rojas.
Air Force added a pair of wins over Army, as sophomores Adam Sumait and Samuel Sheikh claimed victorious decisions in their respective bouts. Sumait defeated Tyler Croft in the 125-pound contest, while Sheikh earned a victory over Colton Sterk in the second of two 156-pound bouts.
The Falcons had two additional entries this evening at the historic Detroit Athletic Club. Junior Jesse Calico dropped a 170-pound decision to Army's Curtis Estes, while senior Brandon Pitts lost a decision Navy's Anthony Alexander in the 185-pound bout.

As the event's champion, Air Force was awarded the inaugural Eddie Weichers Outstanding Team Award, which is named in honor of the Falcons' longtime coach who retired in early September and helped found the service academy event at the Detroit Athletic Club.
Air Force returns to action next Friday (Oct. 31), when it travels to West Point, N.Y., for the annual dual with Army that runs in conjunction with activities surrounding the Air Force-Army football game.
