U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Seventh-ranked Air Force out scored No. 4 Nebraska in rifle at the USAFA Falcon Rifle Range on Saturday. At the conclusion of the smallbore and air rifle matches, Air Force beat Nebraska, 4667-4648. This is the Falcons second win at home against Nebraska; the last time the two teams met at USAFA was in 2011.
In smallbore, Air Force led Nebraska, 2307-2300. The top-three finishers in smallbore were Nebraska's Lauren Phillips (585), Air Force's David Higgins (581) and Meredith Carpentier (577). Higgins shot a 198 in prone, a 198 in standing and 185 in kneeling.
Air Force shooter Tyler Rico led in air rifle with a personal best 593 scoring a 198, 199 and 196. The Husker's Jaycee Carter was the No. 2 shooter with a 592 followed by Carpentier with a 591. Higgins and Kevyn Stinett tied with a 588 each for fifth and sixth place, respectively. Air Force won the air rifle relay, 2360-2348.
"We are off to a solid start," said Air Force head coach Launi Meili. "We should be averaging this score (2360) in air rifle each match, and improve in smallbore as the season progresses. So this is a good point to start from and build toward the nationals."
Next on the schedule is Nevada on Oct. 18 in Reno.
