USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Highlighted by a mix of veteran talent and promising prospects, the Air Force boxing team kicked off the home portion of its season this evening (Nov. 20) with the inaugural Thursday Night Throwdown event at the Academy's newly-renovated Cadet Boxing Room.
Junior Jesse Calico was voted as the team's Boxer of the Night, after earning a unanimous decision over classmate Max Zendali in the 180-pound contest.
Calico's bout was one of four matchups contested in the upper weight divisions. Sophomore Johnny Wells took a decision from freshman Naji Bseiso at 175 pounds, while freshman Joe Asenuga won his collegiate debut with a 185-pound decision over classmate Mike Winbourne and junior Chad Turney claimed the judges' decision over fellow junior Otto Sunday at 188 pounds.
Senior Roy Taylor opened the competition with a 138-pound decision over junior Jamal Johnston, while junior Peter Coote claimed a 142-pound bout over sophomore newcomer Landon Tomcho.
A piece of history was made during the program's first Thursday Night Throwdown event, as juniors Susan Hurtado and Hope Stremcha competed in the Academy's first women's bout. Competing at 122 pounds, Hurtado held off Stremcha to earn the judges' decision.
The Falcons return to action on Monday night, when select boxers travel to New York City for a National Collegiate Boxing Association showcase at the New York Athletic Club.
