
Fencing's Alex Im wins gold at Amarillo Open

In the pool of 52 fencers, Alex Im (Hartsdale, N.Y.) earned the first gold medal of his career. Im won the senior mixed epee champion title with six straight wins during the Amarillo Open in Texas, Sept. 21. Im who was seeded 17 after finishing 4-1 in the pools advanced to the top 64 where he beat his first opponent, 15-4, and advanced to the table of 32, winning 15-6.
In the table of 16, he beat Grady Miram from Northern Colorado Fencers, 15-9, which sent him to the final eight. Im won, 15-11, earning the berth to the final four. Proceeding to the gold medal bout, Im fenced Air Force fencers James Salem, winning the bout in a tie 11-11 and progressed to the final bout against fellow fencer Alexander Elwers. Im won the title with a 15-2 victory.
