Air Force Wrestling Rallies To Win At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Air Force wrestling won its last three matches to rally to a 20-19 dual win over Cal Poly (1-9) Friday night at Mott Athletics Center. Junior Josh Martinez capped the comeback with a win by major decision in the final bout of the night to improve the Falcons to 4-2 on the season.

Trailing 10-19, the Falcons reeled off consecutive wins at 197, 285 and 125 pounds.

Junior Jack Carda earned a 3-1 decision over JT Goodwin to pull Air Force to within six, traling 19-13. Senior Marcus Malecek then won a tie-breaker in overtime overtime over Nicolas Johnson to make it a 19-16 score.

Martinez, ranked ninth in the nation (InterMat) at 125 pounds, then posted a 10-0 major decision over Isaac Blackburn to earn four points and rally the Falcons to the 20-19 win.

Air Force won six weight classes on the night. Sophomore Anthony McHugh started the dual off with a 10-4 win over Jason Delacruz at 133 pounds. After Cal Poly picked up a fall at 141 pounds, sophomore Jerry McGinty earned a 10-2 major decision over Jacob Leon at 149 pounds to put the Falcons up 7-6.

After the Falcons lost at 157 pounds, senior Jesse Stafford, ranked 18th in the nation (InterMat), earned an over-time win over Travis Berridge at 165 pounds to the Falcons back up 10-9. Cal Poly got a fall at 174 pounds and a major at 184 pounds to go up 19-10.

The Falcons then mounted their rally for the win.

Air Force has a day off before returning to action Sunday, Jan. 18, at Stanford. The dual will be televised nationally on the Pac 12 Networks.
