Fencing team finished 4-9 in Western Invitational

The Air Force women's squad finished the event with a 2-5 record, scoring wins over the Florida epee team (7-2) and Caltech (21-6). The women lost to Brandeis (13-14), Duke (8-19), Northwestern (7-20), UC San Diego (12-15) and Stanford (13-14).
The Falcon men's team finished the day 2-4, picking up wins against the men's epee team from Florida (7-2) and Caltech (22-5). The men lost to Brandeis (13-14), Duke (10-17), UCSD (13-14) and Stanford (12-15).
In epee, foil and saber, Air Force was undefeated against Caltech, 6-0. The cadets were 3-0 against the Northwestern women's teams, and Air Force defeated the men's and women's epee team from Florida, 14-4. The Falcons split with Stanford, 3-3, defeating the women's epee squad, 6-3, and 5-4 in the men's epee and 7-2 in women's foil.
Although, the men's epee and women's foil team won against Brandeis (7-2, 7-2), the other squads lost, resulting in a 26-28 score.
Northwestern, who only a women's team, beat the Falcon women, 7-20: 7-2 saber, 7-2 epee and 6-3 foil.
The women's foil squad of Mary McElwee, Madeleine Girardot and Nicole Quattrociocchi and the men's epee team of James Salem, Nathan Lee and Elias Johnson were successful against Duke, San Diego and Stanford. However, the other squads lost resulting in an 18-36 defeat against Duke, a 25-29 loss against UCSD, and a 21-32 defeat against Stanford. All Falcon squads defeated Caltech, 43-11.
Individually, in men's epee, Salem had a 13-2 record, Johnson had an 8-6 record, and Lee finished with a 10-5 record. In women's epee, Waverly Hock totaled a 9-9 record, Rachel Evans finished 8-10 and Schaeffer McHenry had a 10-8 record.
In men's foil, Alexander Chiang held the high record of 11-3. In women's foil, McElwee had a 15-1 record and Girardot scored a 13-4 individual victory. Quattrociocchi finished 6-10. While in men's saber, Matthew Bergstedt finished 5-7, Ryan Redhead was 9-5, followed by Emiliano Kaptain who had a 5-5 record.
Air Force now 6-17, will have a chance to improve on the collegiate record when they compete in the Northwestern Invitational on Jan. 3-Feb. 1 in Evanston, Ill.
