
Matthew Bergstedt fencing team's top performer

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado: - More than 2,000 fencers traveled to Richmond, Va., to compete in an Olympic qualifying tournament -- the October North American Cup -- from Oct. 9-12. Air Force fencer Matthew Bergstedt of Carlsbad, Calif., was the team's top performer in the four-day event.
In the men's Division II saber tournament, Bergstedt, who was the 48th seed with a 4-2 record in pools, advanced to the top 16 before losing to a fencer from Metro NYC (9-15). Bergstedt finished 14th among 60 fencers. He also competed in the Division I saber as the 69th seed; he was knocked out of the top 64 and finished tied for 54th place among 146 fencers.
In women's Division I foil, Nicole Quattrociocchi finished 99th among 166 and finished 66th among 132 in Division II foil.
In men's Division I epee, Nathan Lee was the squad's top finisher in 66th place. Robert Chado finished 106th in a field of 290 fencers. James Salem finished 108th in the field. Cameron Sullivan finished 136th and Elias Johnson placed 151st.
In the men's Division II saber tournament, Ryan Andrieux finished 58th overall. In men's Division I foil, Nicholas Pollack tied at 217. Lauren Sides competed in women's Division II saber and finished 95th.
In day four of the NAC, Chado competed in Division II epee, he finished 41st in the field of 128.
The Falcons host the annual Falcon Open on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the USAFA Cadet Gymnasium in the center gym. The two-day event starts at 9 a.m. on both days.
