OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Highlighted by a runner-up finish from junior Brenden Bone, the Air Force golf team finished second at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, which concluded this afternoon (Oct. 13) at the Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan. The Falcons shot a 292 on the final 18 to finish the tournament with a 15-over par total of 879 (290-297-292) – just one stroke off the lead.
Bone, who entered the day in a tie for fifth, carded a one-under par score of 71 on the final 18 holes to move into second. The junior was one of just three golfers to finish below par, as he completed the three-round tournament with a two-under total of 214 (72-71-71). His finish is the best an Air Force golfer since Kyle Westmoreland earned the same placement at the UCSB Intercollegiate in April 2014.
Classmate Sunwoo Choi joined Bone within the top 10 of the final standings, as he recorded his best round of the tournament (even par 72) to finish in a tie for eighth with a three-over total of 219 (73-74-72). Freshman Bryant Falconello, who shot a one-over 73 in the final round, moved up nine places on the final day to finish tied for 13th, with a six-over total of 222 (73-76-73).
Sophomore Sutton Farmer added a top-25 finish to Air Force's lineup, as he tied for 23rd with a nine-over par total of 225 (72-76-77), and freshman Tate Tatom rounded out the Falcons' five-man roster by tying for 67th with a three-round score of 238 (+22, 76-86-76).
Senior Michael Fan, competing as an individual this week, shot a 78 on the final day to finish in a tie for 64th with a three-round, 21-over par score of 237 (77-82-78).
With a 14-over score of 878, Wichita State finished just one stroke ahead of Air Force (879, +15) to capture the team title at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate. The two squads separated themselves from the rest of the field on the final day, as Gonzaga and host UMKC tied for third with matching scores of 888 (+24). Wichita State's Grant Bennett claimed medalist honors after finishing the tournament with a 10-under score of 206. Bone and Gonzaga's Sean Walsh, who tied for second with two-under scores of 214, were the only other golfers in the field to finish below par.
Air Force concludes the fall portion of its season next week, when it travels to El Paso, Texas, for Price's Give'Em 5 Invitational. The three-day event begins on Friday, Oct. 23.
