U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Air Force men's soccer picked up a 1-0 win against UTRGV (4-7, 1-3) in Western Athletic Conference action Friday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcon's WAC record is now 2-2 with an overall record of 5-6.
The Falcons would strike with the only goal in the game by Tucker Axhoj at the 87:41 mark from a turnaround 10 yards out. Freshman Tucker Bone assisted on the score. Axhoj led the Falcons with four shots and a goal. The Vaqueros only tallied two shots, one in each half. Air Force tallied 25 shots on the game.
Ben Kern led the Falcons in total shots with five. Bone and Cameron Duley also logged four shots a piece. Falcon goalkeeper Rob Blair logged 90 minutes in the shutout and did not face a single shot attempt on goal.
The Falcons tallied 26 total fouls while the Vaqueros were tabbed with two. Air Force held the advantage in corner kicks 8-1.
"I thought we had a really good game plan to go against their plan to set in," said Falcons head coach Doug Hill. "We were able to break it down and find second bounces and that's when the goal eventually came. We just had to stick to the game plan."
Coach Hill also added, "I thought Gus Jensen, our mids, and our forwards did really great work. They were putting in the miles today trying to break down the defense."
"When a team packs it in that tight you have to be patient, and eventually it will come, and tonight it did. It was a well-deserved goal by Tucker Axhoj and a great win by the team."
Air Force continues conference action against Houston Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1pm, at Cadet Soccer Stadium, USAFA.
