Falcon Wrestling Concludes Wrestling at the CKLV

Las Vegas, Nev. - Air Force wrestling began action Friday morning in the Cashman Center, Las Vegas, Nev., for the 34th-Annual Cliff Keen Invite. Hundreds of wrestlers from 39 teams participated in the prestigious two-day event. 10 Falcon wrestlers led by Josh Martinez took to the mats to represent Air Force.
At the end of day one team captain, Josh Martinez (133) would be the only Falcon wrestler to advance to the second day of competition in the consolation bracket. Martinez earned a 4-0 decision over CSU-Bakersfield's Carlos Herrera in the round of 32. In the following round, Martinez picked up an 8-6 decision victory over 10 seed Jade Rauser of Utah Valley University in the round of 16.
In the championship quarter-finals round of eight, Martinez met with a three-time all-American in number two seed, Nahshon Garrett of Cornell University. Martinez would drop an 11-3 major decision to the all-American and enter the consolation bracket for day two with a 2-1 tournament record.
At the beginning of day two, Martinez squared off against Joey Palmer of Oregon State to win a 9-6 decision over the Beaver wrestler. In the consolation round of four, Martinez took to the mat against 12 seed, Josh Alber of Northern Iowa. Alber would top Martinez with a 3-2 decision and send Martinez to the seventh place bout against Mack McGuire of Kent State University. Martinez would drop the 5-3 decision in his final bout of the day and conclude with a 3-3 tournament record and an eighth place finish in the 133 class.
In day one action, Marcus Malecek (HWT) ended action with a 2-2 record, tallying two major decisions over Missouri's James Romero and Damian Trujillo of North Idaho College. Drew Romero (125) concluded the event at 2-2 after picking up two wins including a major decision over Landon Bailey of North Idaho College. Parker Hines (197) ended at 1-2 with a logged tech fall over Chris Restad of Western Wyoming College in the round of 32.
Other Falcons to earn a win on the day were David Walker (141) with a 10-8 decision and Anthony McLaughlin (184) with a 6-5 decision.
Falcon wrestling will take a three week break in competition before sending a band of wrestlers to compete at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1-2, 2016.
