2015 Winter Airgun Championships

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The Air Force rifle team took part in Part I of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dec. 4-6, formally known as the Winter Airgun Championships.
For the Falcons, Spencer Cap was ranked sixth among 83 top competitors. Second lieutenant Meredith Carpentier (class of 2015) also competed for Air Force. She finished fourth, scoring 1256.3 points. Ryan Jacobs finished 11th with 1859.2 points overall among 120 shooters. Over 430 athletes competed at the event. The two-part Olympic Trials began Friday as athletes faced three straight days of competition. Each day's qualifying scores and points from the event finals will be added to each competitor's score to get a cumulative total.
The team's overall finishers in the 10m air rifle men's competition was Jacobs, ranked 11th, shooting for three days, scoring a 619.6, 619.8, and 619.8 for a total score of 1859.2. Cap was ranked 15th in the match, shooting 612.7, 615.2, and 622.6 for a total of 1855.5 points. Tyler Rico's scores for the three days were 618.6, 618.3, and 617.8 (1854.7). Ranked 30th, David Higgins shot 612.8, 610.3, and 615.9 (1839.0). Ranked 34th, Spencer Brandon's three days included scores of 612.8, 611.9, and 608.3 (1833.0). Nick Learn was ranked 46th, scoring 608.3, 604.2, and 610.1 (1822.6), and Noah Kwock, ranked 63rd, scored 593.1, 598.0, and 604.9 (1796.0).
In the 10m air rifle men's junior championship, Cap, ranked sixth, shot a 612.7, 615.2, and a 622.6 (1856.5). Nick Learn was ranked 20th with scores of 608.3, 604.2, and 610.1 (1822.6), and Kwock, who was ranked 35th, scored 593.1, 598.0, and 604.9 (1796.0).
Carpentier was Air Force's top shooter overall and in the 10m air rifle women. Carpentier finished the weekend with a score of 1256.3. Her three days of scoring included a 415.8, 414.0, and a 417.5. Ranked 28th overall, Kevyn Stinett shot a 407.2, 407.9, and a 414.4 (1229.5). Anna Weilbacher finished the weekend ranked 34th with scores of 408.7, 405.1, and 410.0 (1223.8). Weilbacher was the only Air Force shooter to compete in the 10m air rifle women's junior championship. With 138 competitors, Weilbacher finished 24th and scored a 408.7, 405.1, and 410.0 (1223.8).
The top-10 participants in each discipline will then advance to the final stage of Airgun Team Trials next June.
With the Winter Airgun Championships, Air Force closed out the first half of the season, and has a 6-5 record. The rifle team will open 2016 in January shooting two matches against The Citadel men and women on Jan. 16-17 in Charleston, SC. Air Force will host Nevada on Jan. 23.
