SUNRISE, Fla. - The Air Force boxing team posted a 4-2 record during the opening day of competition at the 2015 National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships in Sunrise, Florida. The men earned three victories during the national quarterfinals on Friday, April 10, while the women claimed their programs' first NCBA win.
Sophomore Heather Parcasio put her name in the history book by recording the first women's victory at an NCBA Championship event. Parcasio posted a victorious 125-pound decision over Daryl Dawson of USC to advance in the bracket and avenge an earlier loss to Dawson in the regional semifinals.
Senior Roy Taylor easily advanced in the competition after recording a knockout in the second round that forced the referee to halt his 125-pound contest with Massachusetts' Andrew Cho. Junior Jamal Johnson earned the judges' decision in his 132-pound bout with Navy's VJ Sakbun, while classmate Gytenis Borusas claimed a victory-by-decision in his 175-pound bout with Lock Haven's Christian Morales.
Sophomores Landon Tomcho and Brett Hagen also competed in the NCBA quarterfinals, but suffered narrow setbacks to their counterparts from Army. Tomcho lost a hard-fought decision to Juan Archuleta in a 139-pound bout, while Hagen dropped a close decision to Colton Sterk at 147 pounds.
With four Falcons earning a bye through today's quarterfinals, Air Force will have a total of eight boxers on the card for the semifinal round of competition at the NCBA Championships. Tomorrow's action is slated to get underway at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at the DoubleTree Sunrise.
