The football team was one of four Air Force athletic teams to earn NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) recognition awards this week, as announced by the NCAA office. The football program (980), hockey (998), lacrosse (996) and women's tennis (1,000) programs were all honored for being in the top 10 percent of their sports for all NCAA programs in Division I for APR.
The football program received the award for the seventh time in nine years which is the most of any public school nationally, including the Mountain West Conference and three service academies.
Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun also earned a 985 coaches APR mark which marks his eighth consecutive year above the national average for Division I programs. Calhoun has averaged a 982 during his career while the national average during his tenure is 946.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and NCAA Football Championship Subdivision).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
