Falcons lose two close games at Nor Cal Tourney

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force water polo team, ranked 16^th in the nation, lost a pair of close games at the Nor Cal Tournament, Sept. 20, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Falcons, 1-7 overall, lost to No. 10 UC Davis (10-7) and to No. 11 UCSD (16-15).

In the first game, No. 10 UC Davis broke open a close game by out-scoring the Falcons 7-1 in the second and third quarters. The Falcons battled back with four goals in the fourth, but fell to the Aggies, 10-7. UCD scored the first two goals of the game, but the Falcons tied the game on goals by Garrett Fisk and Ben Rogers. The Aggies scored two goals in the second quarter for a 4-2 lead at the half. UCD then outscored the Falcons, 5-1, in the third quarter for a 9-3 lead. Riley Thomas scored two goals in the fourth and Fisk and Justin Harrison each scored one but the Falcons could not get closer than the final margin.

In the final game of the tournament, Air Force fell behind early and battled back to take a lead, only to see No. 11 UC San Diego score two late goals for a 16-15 win. The Tritons scored the first four goals of the game, but the Falcons chipped away until finally taking a lead at 9-8 on a goal by Robby Stiefel in the third quarter. From that point on, the game see-sawed back and forth until UCSD took a 16-14 lead with 2:47 left. Justin Harrison scored with 1:54 left to make the score 16-15, but the Falcons could not get another before time expired. Stiefel had a career-high six goals in the game.

The Falcons will face Cal Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 25, in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Air Force faces Navy on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Malibu, Calif.
