
Air Force water polo drops two at Triton Invitational

USAF Academy, Colo. --- The Air Force water polo team fell to two top 10 teams at the season-opening Triton Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 5, in La Jolla, Calif. The Falcons, ranked 17th in the nation, fell to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 8-7, in the first game and then lost to No. 8 Pepperdine, 10-5, later in the day.
In the first game, Air Force opened the scoring on a goal by Garrett Fisk. The Gauchos took the lead midway through the first quarter and build a 5-3 halftime lead. With one second left in the in the third quarter, Falcon Eric Curia scored to cut the UCSB lead to 7-6. UCSB took an 8-6 lead with 4:10 left and the Falcons scored a late goal to make up the final margin. Fisk and Curia each scored two goals for the Falcons. Junior Max Benson made 17 saves.
In the second game, Pepperdine took a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter, but the Falcons came back to tie the game at 3-3 on Robby Stiefel's goal with 7:31 left in the second. Pepperdine scored the next two for a 5-3 halftime lead. Falcon Justin Harrison scored first in the third quarter to cut the Waves' lead to 5-4. Pepperdine scored four of the next five goals and held off the Falcons for a 10-5 win. Fisk scored two goals for the Falcons. Caleb Guarino made seven saves for the Falcons.
The Falcons continue play in the Triton Invitational with a pair of games on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Falcons face No. 5 Pacific at 10:40 am PT and No. 9 UC Irvine at 2:40 pm PT
