
Falcons Fall to Villanova in Pioneer Classic Opener

DENVER, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-1 contest to Villanova in the opening match of Denver's Pioneer Classic on Friday, Sept. 4. The Falcons, who won the first set 25-22, before dropping the final three games by 25-12, 25-16, 25-18 margins, fell to 1-4 on the year.
The Falcons tallied a season-high 21 blocks for the match, including solo blocks from freshman Elizabeth Pennington, senior Raquel Rosas and classmate Akokwe Clement. Adding a team-leading seven assisted stops in the match, Rosas led all players and equaled her career-high with eight total blocks.
Three Falcons tallied double-digit dig totals, including senior Rebecca Bates, who led the team with 14. Clement accounted for a season-best 13, while classmate Rachael Bradley Powers added 10. Clement and Bradley Powers also teamed up from the serving line, recording two aces apiece.
Sophomore Shelley Spires paced Air Force with nine kills, while Clement and senior Maggie Sherrill added totals of eight and seven, respectively. Freshmen Sarah Hellman and Shanleigh Conlan posted assist totals of 18 and 14, respectively.
Air Force returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 5), when they face Denver at 12:30 p.m. and first-time opponent UT Arlington at 5:00 p.m., inside Hamilton Gymnasium on the University of Denver campus. The Falcons' match against the host Pioneers will be streamed live on DenverPioneers.com and broadcast on Altitude.
