NEW ORLEANS – Air Force senior Hannah Everson was named the National Division I Women's Runner of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association this afternoon (Sept. 8). Everson, who also nabbed Runner of the Week honors from the Mountain West, is the first athlete in Academy history to earn the USTFCCCA's national weekly award.
Everson claimed top honors at the Colorado State Invitational on Friday, Sept. 4, as she completed the 5K course in a winning time of 17:31.8. Everson, who also captured the meet title during the squad's last appearance in Fort Collins (2013), crossed the finish line five seconds ahead of the rest of the 100-member field.
The race marked the 10th consecutive meet where Everson has been the Falcons' top finisher – an unprecedented streak that dates back to the start of her sophomore year.
With her win, Everson guided Air Force to a runner-up finish in the overall standings of the seven-team meet, trailing only fourth-ranked Colorado. Air Force also accounted for 3-1 dual meet record against Division I opponents, including victories over conference teams from Colorado State and Wyoming.
The senior, who shared the conference's Sept. 8 award with Colorado State's Cole Rockhold (men's runner of the week), was joined on the USTFCCCA's weekly national team by Alabama's Antibahs Kosgei (Division I men), Harding's Ewa Zaborowska (DII women), Indianapolis' Alex Cushman (DII men), Lebanon Valley's Kelsey Patrick (DIII women) and Carleton's Hart Horner (DIII men).
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the annual Woody Greeno Invitational.
