Falcons beat UMKC, Rockhurst in women's tennis

Air Force defeated Missouri-Kansas City, 4-3, and Rockhurst, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's tennis matches at the KC Racquet Club in Kansas City, Mo. The wins improve the Falcons to 5-4 overall, including a 2-1 mark on the weekend.
UMKC opened the match by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Chloe Forlini and Elizabeth Barnickel picked up the lone win for Air Force, posting a 6-5 (7-3) win over Raquel Argenal and Mariam Kurasbediani at No. 2.
The Falcons won four of the six singles matches to win the match. Chloe Forlini defeated Melinda Johnson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles while Barnickel was a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 winner of Kurasbediani at No. 3. Lily Forlini beat Raquel Argenal, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 while Elisa Nelson beat Allie Schulte, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.
Air Force rolled past Rockhurst, opening with the doubles point and sweeping all six singles matches. Jocelle Rudico and Chloe Forlini were 7-6 (4) winners at No. 1 while Lily Forlini and Nelson won 6-1 at No. 3. Mary Meyers won 3-6, 6-2, 10-2 at No. 1 singles while Chloe Forlini was a 7-5, 6-0 winner at No. 2 and Barnickel locked up the win in the third spot, 6-2, 6-3. Rudico won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Lily Forlini won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and Nelson was a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-7 winner at No. 6.
"I was a really pleased with the progress the team is making, Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "What they are learning and applying from match to match is making is just great! For the second time this season, we had three matches left on the court and needed to win them all in the third set. Playing in front of her home town, freshmen Elizabeth Barnickel clinched her third set 6-3 to give the team their hard fought victory. The match of the day could have been Mary Meyers, who fought off six match points before losing 10-8."
