COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After recording the third-best pole vault clearance in conference history on Saturday, Air Force senior Dylan Bell (Alvarado, Texas) was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week this afternoon (April 26). It is his third weekly award of the year – and the seventh of his career.
Bell cleared a career-best 18'2½" to finish second out of 21 jumpers in the pole vault at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Saturday, April 23. With that clearance – a personal improvement of eight inches, Bell became the fifth Falcon in program history to surpass the 18-foot bar in outdoor competition. That jump, which is ranked second on the Academy's all-time list, is also the third-best clearance in conference history.
His 18'2½" clearance, which bettered the previous Clyde Hart Stadium record by nearly one foot, was tied for the second-best height in the nation last week. Bell is currently ranked first in the conference and fifth in the NCAA this season.
The senior, who also claimed the conference award twice during the indoor season, shared the league's April 26 award with Utah State's AJ Boully (men's track), and Fresno State's Annemarie Schwanz (women's track) and Je'Nia Sears (women's field).
Air Force returns to action this weekend, Bell and several of his teammates travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 107th Drake Relays on Thursday-Saturday (April 28-30).
