COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Hannah Everson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Taylor Smith (Clovis, Calif.) were honored by the Mountain West this afternoon (April 5), as Everson was named the MW Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and Smith was selected the MW Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. It is the first conference award for Everson and the third for Smith.
Clocking a 10,000-meter time of 33:05.26 at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, April 1, Everson shattered her own Academy record in that event and debuted in third on the Mountain West's all-time standings. Deleting 78 seconds off of her previous ‘best' time and more than 90 seconds off of a Senior Class Record that had stood since 1991, Everson finished third amongst collegiate competitors in the top 10K section and 11th overall at Stanford. With the third-fastest 10,000-meter time in conference history, she is currently ranked first in the conference, first in the West Region and third in the nation.
Everson has now reset the Academy 10K record three times in four career races at that distance.
Smith cleared a career-best height of 7'1" to finish as the top collegiate jumper (fourth overall) in the Invitational section of the high jump at the Stanford Invitational. In addition to posting the second-best clearance in program history, the junior also debuted in fifth on the Mountain West's all-time outdoor standings. With that clearance, Smith is currently ranked first in the conference, eighth in the West Region and 15th in the nation.
The pair shared the conference's April 5 awards with Boise State's David Elliott (men's track) and Fresno State's Je'Nia Sears (women's field).
The Falcons return to action this weekend (April 8-9), when they travel to the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and the Colorado Invitational in Boulder.
