U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Air Force alum David Higgins, Class of 2016, finished out of the final and medal round where it took a 624.8 or above to make the final cut. Higgins scored a 617.7 to place 40th in the men's 50m prone qualifying round today at the Olympic Games in Rio. Russia's Sergey Kamenskiy set a new Olympic record with a 629.0.
According to USA Shooting, "Not the results we were seeking in Men's Prone Rifle this morning. It was a tricky swirling wind, described as left-to-right and coming back around, and got worse throughout the 50-minute affair. Those that did well made the adjustments or quickened their pace."
"David fought hard in the challenging wind conditions. He followed his competition plan, but shots were just not going as deep into the 10 ring as they needed to be to stay with the finalists in the event," said USAFA rifle head coach Launi Meili. "We are so proud of his achievement in making the Olympic Team. It's the biggest stage in the world of sports, and even though you do everything within your capability to prepare, the atmosphere can still take your breath away. David will take away lessons learned and know how to improve his preparation for the goals he sets next in his career."
Higgins is the first Air Force Academy cadet to ever qualify prior to graduation.
