Falcons split two at Triton Invite

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force water polo team, ranked 15^th in the national preseason poll, opened the 2016 season by splitting a pair of games at the annual Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, Saturday, Sept. 3, in La Jolla, Calif.

The day started with a 14-8 win over Cal Lutheran. The Falcons took a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and built a 9-2 lead at the half en route to the first win of the season. Senior Erik Whyte and junior Riley Thomas each had four goals. Whyte led the Falcons with two assists. Senior goalie Max Benson played the first three quarters and had six saves.

In the second game, sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara defeated the Falcons, 20-11. The Gauchos raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first and 13-4 at the half. Each team scored seven goals in the second half, but the Falcons were unable to make up the first-half deficit. Senior team captain Riley Quinlan led the Falcons with three goals. Garrett Fisk and Jack Empey each scored two goals.

Air Force is back in action Friday-Sunday, Sept. 9-11, at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
