U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - The 18th-ranked Falcons downed UTRGV (3-4-1, 0-2 WAC), 1-0, Sunday afternoon, in league action at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The shutout victory marks Air Force's eighth shutout of the season. The Falcons improve to 8-1-1 with a 2-0 mark in conference play.
The Falcon offense wasted no time getting down to business against the Vaqueros, as junior midfielder Tucker Bone notched a goal in the fifth minute via Klint Parker's assist. The goal marked Bone's third of the season, while Parker was credited with his first assist.
Both teams settled in following the goal, holding each other scoreless for the remainder of the half. Air Force took eight first-half shots to the Vaqueros' four. The Falcons continued to put the pressure on UTRGV's defense, peppering the Vaqueros with nine second-half shots. After a scoreless second half, Air Force finalized the game with the advantage in total shots, 17-6, led by Austin Dewing and Bone with three apiece. The Falcons have outshot every opponent this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Seazzu recorded his third shutout in as many tries, maintaining a perfect save percentage with seven saves in 270:00 minutes played this season.
"It was a great way to start the conference weekend with two wins at home," said head coach Doug Hill. "The next level for our program is to start putting teams away, building our bench and to start scoring two or three more goals; when you have 17 attempts you need to net more than one."
"I'm proud of the defense and proud of our eighth shutout," continued Hill. "We're going to start working on getting more players in the game so we can carry this momentum through the rest of the season."
Air Force continues league action at home next weekend, hosting Houston Baptist, Sunday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m. A live stream and live stats will be available for the match.
