COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore Denise Ssozi (Johnston, Iowa) and freshman Kathleen Medill (Lincoln, Neb.) were honored by the Mountain West on Monday, Oct. 16, as the Air Force volleyball team swept the league's weekly awards. Ssozi was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week, while Medill was named the MW Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first conference honor for both Falcons – and the program's first weekly honor since 2015.
The pair helped Air Force to a perfect 2-0 weekend at the Academy on Oct. 12-14, as the Falcons collected a 3-1 victory over Utah State and a 3-0 sweep of Boise State – a record that marked the squad's first two-match win streak in conference play since 2014.
Ssozi recorded her best weekend of the conference campaign, hitting over .300 in both matches and averaging 4.29 kills per set. The sophomore collected 14 kills, three assists, two aces and seven digs against Utah State, as she helped Air Force to just its second win ever over the Aggies. Ssozi added a match-high 16 kills, three digs and two blocks in the Falcons' sweep of Boise State – the program's first sweep in the series and their third all-time victory over the Broncos.
Medill had a stellar weekend of action guarding the net, as she led the Falcons with 15 total blocks (one solo, 14 assisted) and paced the team in stops during both contests (nine against Utah State, six against Boise State). The freshman tallied career-high numbers in assisted (eight) and total (nine) stops against the Aggies, while also collecting her sixth solo block of the year. She added six assisted stops against the Broncos, en route to a 2.14 blocks-per-set average for the weekend. In addition to her blocking, Medill added three kills in each match, hitting .200 or higher in both contests, and collected one ace.
It is just the second time this season that one team has captured both weekly awards.
