Air Force MBB downs Canisius, 93-79

Air Force had five players in double figures to beat Canisius, 93-79, Tuesday night in the second game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase at the Academy.
Lavelle Scottie scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Falcons, while Ryan Manning added 15 points. Frank Toohey and Jacob Van added 13 points each while Trevor Lyons added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Air Force shot 46 percent from the field, including a 42.9 clip from 3-point territory on nine-of-21 shooting. The Falcons out-rebounded Canisius, 34-31, and forced 14 turnovers while recording six steals and four blocked shots.
Air Force hit 92.7 percent from the free throw line, including its first 11 attempts. The team's percentage is the 11th best in school history and best since hitting 94.1 percent vs. Colorado College Nov. 17, 2010.
Air Force used a 17-5 run midway through the first half to take a 28-17 lead with 8:03 to play in the first half. Five different players scored in the run, led by four points from Scottie. The Falcons took the lead for good, 14-12, during the run on a 3-pointer by Sid Tomes, who finished with a season-high eight points.
Canisius cut the lead to two points late in the half and again early in the second half, but never tied or regained the lead. Air Force put it away with a 12-2 spurt midway in the second half to take its biggest lead, 75-60, with 8:44 remaining. Canisius got as close as six points, 82-76, with 2:04 remaining, but the Falcons hit nine straight free throws to extend the lead and make up the final margin.
Canisius was led by Jermaine Crumpton, who had a game-high 20 points. Isaiah Reese added 14 points and Malik Johnson 10. Canisius hit 42.9 percent from the field and 31.4 from 3-point territory. The Griffs added an 87.5 clip from the free throw line in a game that featured 49 fouls.
Air Force improved to 2-0 for the second straight season and third time in head coach Dave Pilipovich's six seasons. Canisius fell to 0-2 overall. Air Force continues play in the Showcase next week by hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday, Nov. 20 and Pacific Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Clune Arena. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
