Air Force downs Pacific for weekend home sweep

Air Force defeated Pacific, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Tennis Courts. The victory gives the Falcons a sweep of a three-match weekend home stand and improves to the team to 6-3 on the year.

"This was a really big win for our program in a dominating way! Pacific was a very strong team and on paper was ranked well above us," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "The energy and fight by every single one of our players was amazing and was a great team effort. We had some very tough matches at the beginning of the season and this team is learning and getting better with every match. I could not have been prouder of them for their effort and intensity!"

Air Force opened the match by winning the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and 2. Elizabeth Barnickel and TJ Fumagalli beat Christian Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz and Anneroos Nederstigh, 6-1, at No. 1 while Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico beat Sabrina Rodriguez and Yuke Asami, 6-3. The No. 3 doubles match was not finished.

The Falcons won five of six singles matches to secure the win. Barnickel closed out a 6-0 weekend with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Nederstigh at No. 2 singles while Fumagalli beat Anna Ramos Vinalas, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Lily Forlini was a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 winner at No. 4 over Rodriguez, Nadeen Lieberman beat Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Rudico defeated Asami, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 6.

Chloe Forlini became the program's all-time leader in combined singles and doubles wins with her doubles win. Forlini has 171 career combined wins to surpass the record of 170 set by Natasha Rizvi from 2011-15.

Air Force hosts Colorado on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. in a Pack the House match before returning to the road for four straight matches.
