New Mexico beats Air Force in five-hour thriller

New Mexico defeated Air Force, 4-3, Saturday morning in a thrilling, five-hour marathon Mountain West women's tennis match at the Academy's Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Tennis Courts.

Air Force opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel beat Dominique Dulski and Rachana Bhat, 6-4, at No. 1 while Lily Forlini and Nadeen Lieberman beat Ludivine Burguiere and Cassie Chung, 6-3, at No. 3.

The Falcons added wins at No. 1 and 2 singles to come within a win of the victory. Chloe Forlini beat Burguiere, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 to record her 30th overall singles win this season to improve to 30-12. She is the first player in program history to record two 30-win seasons in her career. She set a then-school record with 33 wins in 2015.

Fumagalli added a dominant, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. She improved to 38-3 overall this season in singles. Coupled with her doubles win to improve to 39-9, Fumagalli has a school-record 77 overall wins this season. She is 77-12 overall which is an 86.5 winning percentage.

New Mexico won the final four singles matches to win the match, including three-set victories at No. 5 and 6 singles. The match was tied 3-all with the No. 6 singles match remaining when Chung beat Jocelle Rudico, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Air Force falls to 18-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play. New Mexico improves to 7-12 overall and 4-1 in Mountain West action.
