USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's soccer dropped a 1-0 contest to Army West Point Friday night in front of a near-capacity crowd of 1,286 at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Brianna Nicholas scored the lone goal of the match in the 36th minute.
Air Force controlled much of the match but could just not find the back of the net. The Falcons held a 19-4 advantage in shots and 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
It was Army that took control of its opportunities, however. Late in the first half, Shea Clare passed across the top of the box to Nicholas who redirected from the right corner to the left post for the score.
The Falcons thought they had an equalizer early in the second half, as Erin Speer found the back of the net from Kaitlyn Cook. The goal was nullified, however, as the referees determined the ball went out of bounds on the end line before Cook passed to Speer.
Senior Angela Karamanos led the Falcons with six shots, two on goal. Eleven different Falcons attempted shots on the night. Junior Jennifer Hiddink had two saves in goal for the Falcons.
The meeting between Army and Air Force was the first in nine years, dating back to the 2008 season.
Air Force returns to action Sunday, Sept. 10, hosting South Dakota.
