Air Force Splits Duals at Intermountain Shootout

The Falcons defeated host Colorado Mesa, 245-147
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the ninth annual Intermountain Shootout Saturday afternoon, Oct. 6, at El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of Colorado Mesa University. The Falcons finished the two-day event with a 1-1 dual record.
Air Force defeated the host Mavericks, 245-147, while coming up short against the BYU Cougars, 254-139. Overall on the weekend, AF had three event wins, while finishing in the top-5 in each of the 21 swimming events.
The Falcons claimed two event wins on the day, beginning with freshman Andrew Limpert, who took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.77. The other event win came from junior captain Zach Nelson in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in with a 2:06.97.
In the two relays, the Blue and Silver had solid days, taking a runner-up finish in both. In the 200 free, Air Force took second, as well as fifth, while later on in the day in the 400 free, AF took silver and bronze. Other runner-up finishes on the day came in the 500 free, as freshman Adam Grimm claimed the second spot with a 4:46.41. The other was from Nelson, as he took second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.93.
On the diving board, the men competed in the 3-meter today. Sophomore Cole Armagost was AF's top finisher, with a dive of 267.25, while fellow sophomore Jack Zocher was right behind him in seventh with a 262.05.
The Falcons will return to the pool in a couple weeks when they open their home and WAC schedule by playing host to the University of Wyoming, Friday, Oct. 19. Action against the Cowboys is set to begin at 5 p.m.
