The Falcons won six events, while tying for first in a seventh
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team had a thrilling dual meet with Western Athletic Conference foe Grand Canyon end in a 121.5-121.5 draw Friday evening, Nov. 2, at Cadet Natatorium.
The Falcons (3-3-1, 0-1-1 WAC) grabbed a lead going into the final event, after winning the final three individual events, but they were edged by the Antelopes in the final relay to result in a deadlocked team score after the conclusion of the 13-event meet.
"It was an incredibly exciting meet with Grand Canyon tonight," Head Coach Rob Clayton exclaimed. "It was a hard fought battle back and forth. We had some incredible swims to give us a chance for a win against some of the top swimmers in the conference."
Overall on the day, the Blue and Silver won six events outright, while tying a seventh. The event tie was the biggest highlight of the night for Air Force, as sophomore Peter Lochmaier tied GCU's Daniil Antipov in the 200 fly with a 1:52.36. Antipov is a three-time conference champion and conference record holder in that event.
Before that swim, Lochmaier won the 200 free earlier in the night after clocking in with a 1:41.61. Freshman Adam Grimm was the other two-event winner, as he took gold in both distance free events, the 500 free (4:45.75) and 1,000 free (9:57.21). His 1,000 free was the only sub-10 minute time on the day.
Fellow freshman, Matthew Lattin, took first in the 100 free sprint, as he clocked in with a 46.13. Junior co-captain Zach Nelson had the final individual swimming win, as he placed first in the 200 breast with a 2:06.23. On the diving board, sophomore Cole Armagost won the 3-meter with a score of 325.13. He also took second on the 1-meter, with a score of 301.50.
The Falcons and Antelopes will have the chance to decide a winner tomorrow, Nov. 3, as they face off again in dual action. Start time from Cadet Natatorium is set for 11 a.m.
