BOISE, Idaho- Air Force swept doubles action and posted four singles wins to cruise by Idaho State, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Boise. The Falcons improve to 9-2 with the win.
Doubles powerhouse TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel didn't drop a single game in the 6-0 win over the Botes sisters in the No. 1 position. In the No. 2 position, freshman duo Ashleigh Harvey and Meredith Jones posted a 6-2 win over Poe/Newell to secure the match point.
In singles, Fumaglli continued to display her dominance, flying by H. Botes, 6-0 before the match retired. Barnickel, who is 9-1 in dual action, showed her ability to battle back after being a set down in the No. 2 position. Barnickel handled H. Botes in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6. Jones improved to 8-2 on the season with a straight-set win over Coburn, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 position. Harvey handled Poe in straight-sets at No. 5, improving to a 9-1 singles dual record.
"It was great to be back on the court after a two week break," aid head coach Kim Gidley. "The team had a weekend off, participated in the Academy tradition, Recognition, and then got right back into the groove of things by putting on a dominating performance in doubles."
"In the singles portion, the team got out into quick leads in four of the six positions," continued Gidley. "In the two singles we were behind, the team fought back to work themselves into the matches. To get a win on the road and at sea level is always great. This team is such a relentless group of fighters. Tomorrow will be exciting."
Air Force will continue action Sunday at 11:30 in the conference opener against Boise State.
