Air Force baseball (12-16) dropped a 5-4 ballgame at Utah Valley (12-15) in a non-conference road game Tuesday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark in Orem, Utah. Air Force's late game rally fell just short as an inning-ending double play quelled the comeback.
Trailing 5-2, Air Force scored two runs in the eighth inning to pull to within one run. With two runners on and one out, Daniel Jones hit a hard line drive. Unfortunately it was right at UVU shortstop Trevor Howell, who caught it and got the lead-runner out to complete an inning-ending double play. The Falcons were unable to score in the ninth to close the game out.
The Falcons had seven hits on the day. Senior Ryan Robb went 2 for 5 with a run scored. Drew Wiss, Nic Ready and Ashton Easley had RBIs. Robb, Rob Dau, Ready and Easley scored runs for the Falcons.
Jeff Gerlica (0-1) took the loss in relief. Starter John Byrnes went three innings, striking out two. Jake Gilbert pitched the seventh and eighth innings, striking out five.
Utah Valley had seven hits. David Modler had two hits, including a home run. Jake Carr (3-1) earned the win in relief. Starter Ondrej Sebek pitched four innings, allowing two runs. Drew Hill picked up the save, getting the final five outs for UVU.
Air Force plated a run in the first before Utah Valley scored two in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons tied it up with a run in the fourth. The Wolverines scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh to go up 5-2.
Air Force returns to action Friday, April 6, beginning at three-game Mountain West home stand against San Diego State.
