U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. -- Air Force came up short against Mountain West foe, Wyoming, 4-3, Friday evening, at the Indoor Tennis Courts of Cadet Gymnasium. The Falcons, now 11-4 on the dual slate, will take on Colorado State at home in the first-of-five matches remaining in the regular season.
Wyoming won the doubles point with victories in the first and third positions. TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel, who are now 8-1 in doubles on the season, left nothing on the table as they battled to a tough loss at the top position. Freshman duo Ashleigh Harvey and Meredith Jones were left unfinished at the No. 2 positions; they remain at 9-3 on the doubles dual slate.
The match ended up coming down to the doubles point as the teams split singles action with three wins apiece. Barnickel, who is 10-2 at the No. 2 position, handled Milka Genkova in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-5. Harvey and Carley Hatcliff battled to wins in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Harvey bested Ana Tkachenko in three, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while Hatcliff imposed her will on Myiah Scott in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-0.
"This was a tough loss because our team played well enough to win," said head coach Kim Gidley. "Wyoming is well coached and they always have a talented group of fighters. We had great momentum in the singles, but Wyoming just kept fighting back. We have an opportunity to learn from this experience and continue to get better."
The Falcons continue MWC action at home as they host the Colorado State Rams for Senior Night. Hatcliff, the lone senior on the team, will be honored by friends and family at the meet. Action is slated to start at noon at the Indoor Tennis Courts of Cadet Gymnasium.
