Colin Dwyer and Andi Almodovar led their respective squads at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational.
LINCOLN, Neb. – Freshman Andi Almodovar and sophomore Colin Dwyer paced the younger members of the Air Force cross country team at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational this morning (Sept. 15) in Lincoln, Nebraska. The men finished seventh in the overall team standings of the meet's Red Division, while the women finished 10th in a field that included a top-12 program.
"We had a lot of runners gain valuable experience today," head coach Ryan Cole said. "We had six freshman and two sophomore girls on the line and an overall inexperienced group of guys. This women's group has a bright future and we had some significant headway on both sides from our first meet two weeks ago. This group has a month to continue improving before their next race and we're excited to see where our varsity group is at in two weeks."
Dwyer clocked an 8K time of 25:43.8 to finish 21st in the 92-runner field and pace the men during their first 8K race of the season. Classmate Konrad Steck also claimed a top-30 finish, as he placed 27th in a time of 25:52.9. Freshman Ryan Ioanidis and senior Erik McMillan finished 39th (26:18.0) and 41st (26:18.8), respectively, while freshman Will Kitzhaber rounded out the squad's scoring finishers with a 53rd-place time of 26:38.4.
On the women's side, Almodovar paced Air Force in their first 6k, as she clocked a time of 22:46.3 to finish 40th in the 142-runner event at Mahoney Golf Course. Classmates Sarah Deresky (46th in 23:02.4) and Mikayla Gallagher (49th in 23:04.6) also collected top-50 finishes, while fellow freshman Sydney Hansen finished 54th with a time of 23:15.8. Sophomore Shay Stayton rounded out the Falcons' scoring runners, as she clocked a time of 23:36.6 to finish 69th.
Freshman Matt Zacharias (59th in 26:49.5), sophomore Aric Kedge (65th, 27:01.7) and freshman Luke Nolley (71st in 27:45.3) also competed in the men's race, while freshman Adrianna Wilder (95th in 24:14.6), sophomore Sarah Bodmer (97th in 24:18.8) and freshman Franny Verville (102nd in 24:27.4) also raced in the women's meet.
Air Force returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28, when it travels to Madison, Wis. – site of this year's NCAA Championships – for the annual Nuttycombe Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
