It was Air Force's best team finish since 2015
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Air Force Academy wresting team crowned two champions, while taking second place as a team, in a highly successful All Academy Championships Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at Plumley Armory on the campus of Norwich University. Freshman Sidney Flores at 125 lbs. and junior Garrett O'Shea at 141 lbs. took home individual titles for the Falcons.
As a team, Air Force had eight of its ten wrestlers finish with the top three of their respective weight classes, including four who finished runner-up. In all, the Blue and Silver scored 99.5 team points to finish in second place, the team's highest finish since 2015.
The Naval Academy took the crown for the second season in a row, totaling 115.5. The rest of the finishers in order were Army West Point (72.5), The Citadel (56.5), VMI (35), Coast Guard (14.5), Merchant Marine (2.5) and Norwich (1).
Flores was the most dominating Falcon wrestler on the afternoon, as the freshman went unscored upon on his way to the title. After notching a first period pin in the quarterfinals, Flores won by 8-0 major decision in the semis, and then 4-0 in the finals over Jacob Allen of Navy to secure the title.
O'Shea was also tough to score on, as the junior won his opener by 10-1 major decision, his first bonus point win of the season. In the semis, he had a dogfight, which he ended up winning, 2-0, on a late escape and penalty point. He would not wrestle the final match, as his opponent had a medical forfeit, giving O'Shea his first career All Academy crown.
The runners up for Air Force were senior John Twomey at 133 lbs., junior Alec Opsal at 149 lbs., senior Alex Mossing at 157 lbs., and freshman Jake Thompson at 184 lbs.
Elsewhere, junior Randy Meneweather and freshman Kayne Hutchison took third at 174 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, while senior Anthony McLaughlin took fourth at 197 lbs. after having to default the third place match.
Air Force now has the next week off from competition before returning to the mats Friday, Feb. 8, for a road conference dual at No. 3 Oklahoma State. Start time against the Cowboys is set for 6 p.m. MT.
