
Falcons sweep pair at Troyer Tournament

Air Force defeated Caltech and Whittier on final day of tournament
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force water polo team won its final two games in the Gary Troyer Tournament, Sat., Oct. 5, in Claremont, Calif.
The Falcons opened the day with an 18-5 win over Caltech. Campbell Harris and Gavin Jones gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter. Caltech came back to score the next three. Eric Kawecki scored on the power play with 51 seconds left as the teams were tied at the end of the first. Mike Miller scored in the second quarter, but Caltech had a 5-4 lead late in the second quarter. Corey Tanis tied the game with 1:41 left and a pair of goals by Ian Shepherd in the final minute gave the Falcons a 7-5 lead at the half.
Air Force outscored Caltech 11-0 in the second half. After goals by Campbell Harris and Gavin Jones, Grant Snyder, Sebastian Sak and Owen Sedej all scored on five-meter shots. Kawecki closed out the third quarter with a goal to make the score 13-5. Jones, Harris, Kawecki, Neil Reynolds and James Dougherty all scored in the fourth. Anthony Tolbert stopped all eight shots he saw in the second half.
In the final game of the tournament, Air Force rallied for a 13-8 win over Whittier. The Poets took a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Grant Snyder scored late in the first, but the Poets had a 4-2 lead after one. Sam Fuller and Campbell Harris scored in the second quarter and the Falcons held Whittier to just one goal as the Poets had a 5-4 lead at the half. Goals by Campbell Harris and Henry Yavitt tied the game at 6-6 midway through the third. Mike Miller then scored three straight goals for a 9-6 Falcon lead at the end of the third. A pair of goals by Harris put the Falcons up 11-6 in the fourth. After Whittier scored twice, Harris and Miller scored in the final three minutes. Harris led the Falcons with five goals while Miller had four. Reagan Pittman, the national lead in assists, had three helpers against the Poets. Tolbert made 11 saves.
Air Force (9-10 overall) opens WWPA action with a home game against UC Davis, Saturday, Oct. 12, at 12:00 pm at the Cadet Natatorium
