Koehnke named special teams player of the year
Air Force had 12 players earn all-Colorado honors by the National Football Foundation, Colorado Chapter. Senior place kicker Jake Koehnke was named the special teams player of the year and was the first-team kicker.
Joining Koehnke on the first team were fellow seniors Kyle Johnson (linebacker), Jeremy Fejedelem (safety) and Mosese Fifita (defensive line), along with junior tailback Kadin Remsberg and junior offensive lineman Nolan Laufenberg.
Junior quarterback Donald Hammond III headlined six second-team members, along with senior offensive linemen Scott Hattok and Connor Vikupitz and senior Zane Lewis (defensive back). They were joined by junior linebacker Demonte Meeks and defensive lineman Jordan Jackson.
Air Force concludes the season in the Cheez-It Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27, at 8:15 p.m. MT at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, Ariz. The Falcons will take on Washington State (6-6, 3-6 Pac-12) from the Pac-12 Conference.
The 24th-ranked Falcons completed the regular season with a 10-2 overall record. The Falcons finished second in the Mountain West Mountain Division with a 7-1 mark. The Falcons have a seven-game winning streak, the program's longest in one season since 1998 when the team won eight straight. The seven-game winning streak is tied as the sixth longest overall in program history.
Air Force is the nation's third most-improved team this season, with a five-game turnaround from 2018. Louisville, Georgia State, Baylor, SMU and Western Kentucky also have a +5 improvement this season. Only Navy and Central Michigan's seven-game improvement is better.
Air Force's 10 wins ties as the third-most in program history, trailing the 12 wins in 1985 and 1998. The team's 10-2 mark is tied for the fourth-best in program history, trailing the 9-0-2 mark in 1958 and 12-1 marks in 1985 and 1998. Air Force has posted its first 10-win regular season under head coach Troy Calhoun and first since the 1998 team went 11-1.
